Retainers 101: Types, Wear Schedules, and Long-Term Care

You're almost finished with your orthodontic treatment and are excited about the prospect of living with a straight, beautiful smile. Something you may not have considered until now is wearing a retainer to maintain the results long-term.

Why is a retainer essential? Your teeth are always moving. Without something to hold them in place, they can shift back toward their original positions.

Orthodontic Retainer Options in Aurora, CO

First, let’s look at the three main types of retainers:

  1. Hawley retainers are designed with a wire that sits across the front of your teeth and a tinted plastic base against the roof of your mouth or along your lower teeth. This type of retainer is durable, adjustable, and has been the gold standard for decades.
  2. Clear retainers, also called Essix retainers, look similar to Invisalign aligners. They’re transparent, comfortable, and virtually invisible. Many patients opt for this type of retainer for aesthetic reasons.
  3. Bonded or fixed retainers are thin wires permanently attached to the back of your front teeth. You can't see them or remove them, which means you can't forget to wear them.

Your Retainer Wear Schedule

Everyone’s needs are unique, but most patients wear their retainers full-time for the first several months, then transition to nighttime-only wear. Your Invisalign dentist in Aurora, CO, will create a customized schedule based on your specific treatment and how your teeth respond.

Caring for Your Retainer

Whether your retainer is removable or fixed, proper care keeps it working effectively:

  • Clean removable retainers daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or denture cleaner
  • Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic retainers
  • Store removable retainers in their case when not wearing them
  • For bonded retainers, use floss threaders or water flossers to clean around the wire
  • Bring your retainer to all dental checkups

Which Retainer Is Right for You?

While Dr. Baller will always consider your preferences, she will recommend the best option based on your specific orthodontic needs.
