Why Isn't My Invisalign® Tracking?

If your Invisalign aligners feel loose, don't seem to fit snugly, or you notice a gap between the tray and certain teeth, your treatment may not be tracking properly. This is one of the most common concerns I hear from my patients mid-treatment. The good news is that it’s usually fixable.

What "Not Tracking" with Invisalign Looks Like

‘Tracking’ means your teeth are moving according to plan and your clear aligners fit the way they should. Signs that something may be off include:

  • Visible gaps between the aligner and one or more teeth
  • A tray that feels too loose before you're scheduled to switch
  • One tooth that looks like it hasn't moved while others have

If you notice any of these, do not just skip ahead to your next tray. Moving forward when teeth haven’t caught up can only worsen the problem.

Common Reasons Clear Aligners Stop Tracking

In my experience as an Invisalign dentist, these are the most frequent causes:

  • Insufficient wear time: Invisalign works best with 20–22 hours of daily wear. Even a few hours short each day adds up over weeks.
  • Skipped or rushed trays: Jumping ahead before your teeth have fully shifted into position throws off the entire sequence.
  • Attachments that have come loose: Those small tooth-colored bumps on your teeth give the aligners grip. If one falls off, certain movements may stall.
  • A particularly stubborn tooth: Some teeth, especially canines and molars, resist movement more than others due to their unique shapes, deep roots, and positions in the jaw

What I Recommend to Get "Back on Track"

If your clear aligners aren't fitting right, contact my office before switching to your next tray. I may recommend backtracking to a previous aligner, extending wear time on your current set, or replacing a loose attachment. These simple adjustments can keep your treatment on track and help you avoid longer or more involved corrections later.
