Is Invisalign Better Than Traditional Braces?

It isn't really a question of one orthodontic treatment being better than the other. Both Invisalign and traditional braces do the job they're designed to do—straighten teeth and correct bite problems.

The question is which suits your unique needs because orthodontic treatment is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Many factors come into play, and that's why it's crucial to have an evaluation with a dentist experienced in orthodontics before you decide.

Benefits of Invisalign Clear Braces

There's no doubt that Invisalign treatment is more convenient than traditional brackets and wires. The clear aligners are comfortable, removable, and create a nearly invisible appearance.

Clear aligners can also correct many of the same issues as traditional braces, including:

  • Crooked or crowded teeth
  • Rotated teeth
  • Overbites
  • Underbites
  • Crossbites

Because Invisalign aligners are removable, there are no food restrictions, and you can brush and floss easily. Teens especially love Invisalign because they don't have to feel self-conscious about wearing metal brackets and wires on their teeth.

When Traditional Braces Might Be a Better Choice

If your dentist in Aurora finds the following issues during your evaluation, you might be a better candidate for traditional braces than Invisalign:

  • Invisalign may not be effective for correcting a severe overbite.
  • Invisalign cannot correctly align teeth that are too rotated.
  • Invisalign does not work well on very short or pegged teeth.
  • Invisalign closes small gaps between teeth, but traditional braces work better for more significant gaps.

Another reason why a patient might have problems with clear aligners is compliance. Invisalign must be worn 22 hours daily to create the desired tooth movement. If you or your teen can't comply with this schedule, you would be better off with traditional braces to see the desired results.

The good news is that traditional braces are now lighter and more discreet today than ever. Tooth-colored ceramic brackets and lighter wires make your treatment more comfortable and less noticeable.
