Helpful Tips for Getting the Most Out of Invisalign Treatment

Getting started with your Invisalign treatment is an exciting step! You’ve decided that you’re tired of hiding your crooked, crowded teeth and can’t wait to pick up your Invisalign clear aligners from your Aurora, CO dentist.

When you receive your aligners, your dental team will explain all you need to know about wearing them and be there for you through every stage of treatment. However, it’s up to you to follow through and manage your day-to-day Invisalign treatment.

Once you get started, you’ll want to achieve the straightest, healthiest smile in the shortest time, so here are some tips for getting the most out of your Invisalign treatment.

Wear Your Clear Aligners 22 Hours a Day

Patients appreciate Invisalign treatment in Aurora because the clear aligners are removable for meals and easy oral hygiene. Unlike traditional metal braces, you are free to eat whatever foods you want without any restrictions.

Since the clear plastic aligners are removable, you may be tempted to “take a break” for longer periods. Resist the temptation if you can, and keep in mind that every moment your Invisalign aligners are out of your mouth, you’re not straightening your teeth. Keeping your aligners out for too long can even start to undo the progress you’ve already made and extend treatment times.

Brush and Floss After Meals

The ability to take Invisalign out for meals is a big plus and one reason many patients choose clear aligner therapy over traditional metal braces. Just be sure to brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in your mouth. Oral hygiene gets rid of food particles that can get trapped under your aligners and lead to bad breath, cavities, and gum disease.

Stay Current with Scheduled Office Visits

Your orthodontist has planned treatment to move your teeth as efficiently as possible. On your first visit, we’ll give you two sets of Invisalign aligners, and you should wear each for 2-3 weeks, switch them for the next set, then repeat the process.

We will schedule appointments for you every 4-6 weeks to monitor your progress and give you the next two sets of aligners. Keeping these appointments and picking up your new aligners as scheduled ensures that your treatment and smile improvement stays on track.

TLC for Your Invisalign Clear Aligners

Your Invisalign aligners need some TLC too. Rinse them when you take them out for meals and oral hygiene because plaque and saliva create a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria.

While wearing your aligners, don’t drink coffee, tea, or colored beverages like colas or cranberry juice. The plastic can absorb the stains, causing your aligners to discolor and lose their crystal-clear appearance.

While you’re brushing and flossing is a great time to clean your aligners in denture cleaner or Invisalign cleaning crystals to keep them fresh and sparkly clean.

Wear Your Retainers After Treatment

Once you’ve worn all your aligners, you've completed treatment, and you can enjoy showing off your confident, straight smile. All that’s left is to maintain the beautiful results by wearing your retainer as instructed by your dentist. Your teeth want to relapse to their original position after treatment, and wearing a retainer prevents this from happening.

Continuing to wear a retainer may seem inconvenient, but it’s a small price to pay to maintain the beautiful, straight teeth you’ve worked so hard to achieve.
