Diet After Implant Surgery: A Practical Menu for the First Two Weeks

November 15, 2025
|

One of the first questions patients ask me after implant surgery is, “So, what can I actually eat?” The first couple of weeks after placement are crucial to implant healing, but eating after surgery doesn’t have to be stressful. With a bit of planning, you can find plenty of nourishing, satisfying food choices.

Post-Implant Surgery Food Tips

To help your implant heal properly, stick to softer foods and avoid chewing on the surgical side. Here are a few simple guidelines:

  • Choose soft, easy-to-swallow foods
  • Avoid crunchy, hard, sticky, or spicy foods
  • Skip straws and very hot drinks
  • Eat smaller, more frequent meals
  • Prioritize protein and hydration to support healing

Days 0–3: Ultra-Soft, Comforting Foods

Swelling and tenderness are normal during the first 72 hours, so focus on foods that require almost no chewing:

  • Broths and blended soups
  • Protein shakes (sipped, not through a straw)
  • Greek yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Applesauce
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Scrambled eggs

Days 4–7: Soft Foods with More Substance

As you start to feel better, you can add soft foods that hold their shape but are still gentle on your mouth:

  • Oatmeal or cream of wheat
  • Soft pasta
  • Avocado or hummus
  • Soft fish like salmon or tilapia
  • Mashed sweet potatoes
  • Soft-cooked vegetables

Week 2: Expanding Your Menu

You can slowly broaden your choices as long as the foods are soft and don’t require strong chewing:

  • Flaky baked fish
  • Risotto or soft rice dishes
  • Quiche or other soft egg dishes
  • Tender shredded chicken
  • Pancakes or waffles

Still avoid anything crunchy, chewy, or sticky, including chips, nuts, raw veggies, crusty bread, and tough meats.
