Before the Braces Go On: A Dentist's Guide for Parents

Starting orthodontic treatment is a big moment for a family, and parents typically have as many questions as their kids. In this blog, you’ll find some helpful tips that I share with families at Baller Dental & Ortho at Southlands before we begin treatment.

Timing Is Everything

I recommend that most children have an orthodontic evaluation by age seven. That doesn't mean treatment starts at seven. But seeing your child at this stage lets me look for and address developing issues while they are easier to manage and correct.

Some kids benefit from early intervention. Sometimes I just monitor the situation until the right time. Either way, it’s always best to know where things stand.

What to Expect in the Early Weeks of Orthodontic Treatment

The adjustment period is real, and I want parents to be prepared for it. Your child will likely experience some soreness for a day or two immediately after I place the braces and after each adjustment appointment. Soft foods help. Over-the-counter pain relievers are fine if needed and recommended by your pediatrician. However, I find most kids adapt faster than parents expect.

Foods and Products to Stock at Home

A few things I suggest keeping on hand:

  • Orthodontic wax — Covers brackets and wires that are causing irritation.
  • A soft-bristled toothbrush and floss threaders — Braces can make oral hygiene a challenge, but keeping teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment is crucial.
  • Soft foods — Handy to have around, especially after adjustments
  • A small mirror — Helpful for checking that nothing is stuck or broken after meals

The Foods Conversation

I have this talk with every family. Sticky, hard, and crunchy foods can damage brackets and wires. Explain to your child that broken brackets and bent wires extend treatment time. Helping them understand the ‘why’ behind food restrictions makes compliance easier than just a list of don'ts.

What to Watch for Between Adjustments

Loose brackets, poking wires, and white spots forming on teeth are the things I most want parents to look for between appointments. White spots are early signs of decalcification, which is a consequence of poor brushing around brackets. Reporting these issues early makes a real difference.
